CHARACTERISTICS

  • Produced from 1963 to 1969. In Europe, it started being produced in 1964.

  • First Rolex Daytona to have the tachymeter insert in the bezel.

  • Produced in stainless steel, 14kt and 18kt gold.

  • Around 13,700 stainless steel pieces were made and only around 300 units were made in gold.

    • 922.900 is the serial number of the first known Daytona.

  • Realised in both standard two-tone and Paul Newman dials.

    • Only around 2,000 to 3,000 units were produced with a Paul Newman dial.

    • The DAYTONA printing signature, inserted around 1965, was introduced in the dial to celebrate Rolex’s historic sponsorship of Nascar stock car race in Daytona Beach.

      • Initially positioned on the top, at 12 o’clock position under the COSMOGRAPH signature, and then later found above the hour totalizer from the second half of the 1960’s on.

  • The reference 6239 was bearing an OYSTER case.

  • Pump push-down buttons in chromed metal, model 24-P3.

  • OYSTER TWINLOCK 600 series winding crown in ridged metal with raised underlined Rolex logo.

  • Domed plexiglas crystal, model TROPIC 21.

  • Metal hands covered in white on black background and burnished metal on white background.

  • The first series have a symmetrical tonneau shape case with a flat and polished case-back.

  • From 1966 on, the reference 6239 is produced with a convex tonneau shape case with a flat and satin-brushed case-back.
